tl;dr: Set your SATA mode to IDE when upgrading/installing Windows 10 on a computer with an AMD 760G/SB710 chipset.
My parents asked me to upgrade their computers to Windows 10, seeing how they’ve been getting the 'your Windows is out of date' nag screens for some time now due to running Windows 7.
My mum’s laptop (Fujitsu A514) went through the upgrade without any trouble, however my dad’s standalone computer, equipped with an AMD FX-4100 processor and an Asus M5A78L-M LE motherboard, gave me much more trouble. I started the upgrade process three times, disconnecting any extra hardware with each next try (it came down to just the main drive, I even disconnected the USB keyboard and mouse), but it still ultimately ended with the DRIVER PNP WATCHDOG error message and reverted the installation back to Windows 7.
Unfortunately, the error description is too generic to know which driver was causing the problem (and I didn’t even know what to grep for in the logs), but I finally found a suggestion somewhere to try switching the SATA mode to IDE. It worked, which means that either the AMD AHCI driver included with the stock Windows 10 installation is defective, or it doesn’t work properly with this particular chipset, or Win10 was trying to use the driver originally installed in Win7, since the system was running with SATA in AHCI mode all the time.

After the upgrade completed, I wanted to restore AHCI mode and installed the Windows 10 drivers straight from the AMD site. However, these drivers also exhibited the exact same problem : the system became stuck while loading with the white dots spinning around and the HDD activity LED blinking every 1-2 seconds. What worked was installing the drivers for Windows 8.1 instead. Here’s a Google Drive link in case the driver disappears from the AMD site. I followed these instructions so that Windows didn’t flip out when switching the modes and reinstalling the drivers. The installer only seems to extract the drivers, so you’ll have to install them manually in safe mode.
